A sports coaching company is encouraging children to get active this Easter – after discovering just over a third of children in Staffordshire are classed as overweight or obese.

Ministry 4 Sport, based in Newcastle-Under-Lyme, was shocked to read new figures which reveal 34 per cent of children aged 10 – 11 are overweight or obese in the county, rising to 39 per cent in Stoke-on-Trent.

The data, released by NHS Digital, introduced a new “severely obese” weight class, which included almost 4 per cent of children in Staffordshire and over 5 percent in Stoke.

Now Ministry 4 Sport, which runs PE, sports and gentle exercise groups from its base in Roe Lane, has established several holiday clubs to educate children about healthy exercise.

Coaching director Sam Bradbury, 25, from Clayton, said: “We are deeply concerned by these figures. We want to help children to understand and value the importance of being active and eating healthily from an early age.”

In Staffordshire, 10 per cent of reception children and 19 per cent of Year Six children were classed as obese. In Stoke-on-Trent, this was 11 per cent and 24 per cent.

Children were weighed and measured in reception class and in the last year of primary school, as part of the Government’s National Child Measurement Programme.

Mr Bradbury added: “We thought holiday clubs would be a great way for children to make new friends, have fun and become comfortable with regular exercise.”

The Ministry 4 Sport team has organised three holiday clubs for children aged 4-12. They are: Newcastle Town FC Soccer School, Betley Multi Sports Holiday Club and a new multi sports holiday club at Congleton High School. The May half-term clubs start on Tuesday 29th May. There will also be clubs running during the summer school holidays.
