Darren Day and Gareth Gates join the cast of Footloose the musical at the Regent Theatre
Darren Day is going to be starring in the autumn leg of the Footloose The Musical tour which will be showing at the Regent Theatre in Stoke-on-Trent this autumn. He will play Reverend Moore.
Darren, who has starred in TV’s Hollyoaks and Holby City and was a finalist in the 2016 series of Celebrity Big Brother, will join additional cast including; Geri Allen, Holly Ashton, Jess Barker, Ben Barrow, Alex Fobbester, Josh Hawkins, Lucy Ireland, Evie Rose Lane, Ben Mabberley, Daniel Miles, Tom Mussell, Samantha Richards, Dionne Ward Anderson and Anna West Lake.
Over the years Darren, who has often been labelled a serial love rat by the media, has become quite a musical theatre favourite despite his turbulent personal life. His first starring theatre role was in Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and he has had an extensive career in the West End including Summer Holiday, Copacabana and Grease. And tours include Alfie, Carousel, Great Expectations, Godspell, The Rocky Horror Show, We Will Rock You and many more – most recently Mame, Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, Bob in Rita Sue and Bob Too and new musical Bumblescratch at the Adelphi Theatre.
On this new role, he says: “I’m truly happy and excited to be a part of this brilliant production. I was a teenager in the 80’s, which is such an impressionable age for movies and music. This is one of the most iconic films and soundtracks from my teenage years. I can remember hearing Footloose on the radio for the first time and thinking… what a tune! It’s been a while since I went out on tour with a musical and am very much looking forward to going back to my musical theatre roots around the UK.”
Also announced is Pop Idol 2002 winner Gareth Gates who will join the cast as Willard. Gates has sold over 5 million records worldwide. His version of Unchained Melody sold over a million copies in the UK and is the 3rd best-selling single of the Noughties.
Gareth says: “I’m thrilled to be back playing the role of Willard in the 2020 UK tour of Footloose. I had so much fun the first time around that I jumped at the chance to play such an exciting role again. I was born in 1984, the year Footloose the movie was first released; I used to watch the movie lots as a kid not knowing some years later I’d be playing the ‘cowboy that can’t dance’ on stages up and down the country. I’m a terrible dancer, so it’s pretty much Life imitating Art!
“The show is packed with classic 80s hits – and audiences get to see a little more of me than they bargained for! I can’t wait to be back on tour with such an incredible show.”
Footloose the Musical will show at the Regent Theatre, Stoke-on-Trent from Monday 9 – Saturday 14 November. Tickets from £13 available from the Regent Theatre Box Office counter, by calling 0844 871 7649 or visiting www.atgtickets.com/stoke.
