Choosing your wedding rings

Choosing your rings is a significant part of your wedding or civil ceremony. Our collection features designs that range from classic with a twist to uniquely contemporary designs.

Here at Allen Brown Jewellery, we welcome the fact that many couples prefer a more individual approach so they can be fully involved in the whole creative process and have rings designed and made especially for them. We work with you to create your rings, from the initial design to the selection of stones and finishes.

Brides

Generally when couples come to choose rings the bride tends to have more of a distinct idea of what she is looking for and the groom less so…..

For the bride, the starting point is always the engagement ring, which the wedding ring needs to complement and enhance. It is always best to use the same metal or carat of gold as the engagement ring to avoid differential wearing. For instance platinum being the hardest of the precious metals is best worn only next to platinum – similarly 18ct gold next to 18ct and 9ct next to 9ct.
Wedding rings can either be a straight band or fitted to the ring. We encourage brides to try on a variety of different rings to determine what looks best although we normally recommend something that is similar in width and depth of the existing ring because visually this is always more pleasing. Over 80% of ladies wedding rings are now diamond set but again this needs to be done symphatically in keeping with the original ring. If matching to an existing ring, it is always important to match the quality of the stones so they sit comfortably together. Commitment rings are also proving increasingly popular where there is just one ring for both engagement and wedding ring and serves a dual purpose. It is normally made with a wider band or has the look of a multi banded ring. With same sex partnerships the rings could be contrasting or complementary to each other.
Once a style and design has been decided upon at this point we often make a silver mock up or a drawing, which gives a much clearer idea of what the finished ring would look like. When the customer is happy with the mock up, the finished ring can then be made to the exact size and specification. Of course, with everything else wedding related, we are always happy to guide and work with the customer to ensure they have something that fits within a budget they are comfortable with.

Groom

Many men aren’t sure they want a ring at all let alone exactly what sort of wedding ring. We show lots of options to the groom not just in profile and width but in the broad range of metals that are now available from gent’s rings to be made from.

In addition to traditional precious metals of platinum, yellow and white gold and now palladium a very popular choice currently, are some of the more masculine metals such as titanium, tungsten and zircon which have been more traditionally associated with industry. All of these alternative metals are very strong and durable and lend themselves to having different textures and finishes such as hammered effect, scratch brushed and distressed. For same sex partnerships they could also be the same rings with different finishes or same material with two different ring styles.
Often a groom who came in not sure on having a ring at all, leaves not being able to choose between two or three options that they like. As with the ladies wedding rings we are very flexible regarding every aspect of the ring.
We can create and design to any request. These designs below are for a gents wedding ring and a groom who loves kayaking. The kayak detail is in platinum

Personalisation

All of the rings can be made more personal by having engraving added be that a name, date, symbol or something special to you. If it is really embarrassing we can let you write it down rather than say it out loud!

Other items of wedding jewellery such as tie pins, cufflinks and pieces for groomsmen and bridesmaids can also be made

Something Old, Something New

We also offer a remodelling service, which is extremely popular. Transforming a family heirloom into a more modern and contemporary item, we can create an individually designed piece for you to wear on your wedding day. The yellow gold from Grandma’s wedding ring can be used on the inside of wedding rings for example.

“Often we use inherited family wedding rings to incorporate into a couples new wedding rings, giving these very special items of jewellery even more of a sentimental significance.”
