The best places to live close to Birmingham

Looking to put yourself within easy reach of Birmingham? It’s a popular option for many at the moment, with research based on search data finding that it ranks as the second-most-considered city for Londoners to relocate to.

However, living in the middle of the UK’s third-biggest city isn’t the ideal solution for many. If you’d rather find a compromise between bustling urban excitement and suburban tranquillity, here are some of the best options to consider that are all within an hour’s travel from Birmingham.

Just outside of Birmingham – a mere 10 minutes by train – is this West Midlands town offering an excellent blend of suburban living and urban convenience. Solihull offers excellent schools and ample green spaces, plus a thriving town centre of its own such that you might not even need to make too many trips into Birmingham itself.

Sutton Coldfield

Nestled on the northern outskirts of Birmingham, Sutton Coldfield exudes charm. It’s a leafy suburb with a sprinkling of Roman history that has easy access to everything you need for convenient living. The town is best known for playing host to Sutton Park, one of the largest urban parks in Europe. This national nature reserve offers over 2,000 acres of gorgeous greenery, marshes and lakes – and there’s even a donkey sanctuary. It’s an incredible place to have on your doorstep for a weekend visit.

Just over half an hour’s drive away from Birmingham, Lichfield remains within easy reach of the hub of Birmingham but nevertheless offers its own delightful mix of historic charm and modern amenities. The city’s stunning cathedral serves as a defining architectural landmark, while quaint streets lined with independent shops and a vibrant arts scene contribute to its unique character.

Under an hour’s train journey away from Birmingham, Gloucester is another great option for a mix of peace, comfort and convenience. Those looking for new homes on the edge of the picturesque Cotswolds will love discovering the city’s historic docks and medieval streets, as well as a gorgeous cathedral of its own. It also boasts great links to the likes of Cardiff and Bristol, so you won’t be short of great days out.

Leamington Spa

Notable for its luxurious Regency architecture, Leamington Spa can be found within an hour’s drive of Birmingham city centre. It’s home to a growing number of jobs, with a pronounced presence from digital industries – including video games – that have earned it the nickname ‘Silicon Spa’, and is steeped in Georgian history. Consistently rated as one of the best places to live in the region, it represents a fine choice for families with children and single professionals alike.
