Exploring the Granary Restaurant and Pink Cottage at Weston Park, Shifnal

Weston Park, nestled in the picturesque countryside of Shifnal, Shropshire, is a quintessential English estate that offers visitors a perfect blend of historical charm, natural beauty, and modern luxury. Among its many attractions are the Granary Restaurant, known for its delightful culinary offerings, and the Pink Cottage, a charming accommodation option that promises a serene and memorable stay.

Staffordshire Living was invited along on Saturday 22nd June 2024 to stay in the amazing Pink Cottage and to dine in the Granary restaurant.   Well, what can I say, dear gentle readers?  Think elegance, think Georgian splendour, think Bridgerton.  I’m not quite sure that my husband and I are as normally as romantic as the characters in the Regency romance drama, however, I certainly felt that the history that was permeating from the walls of the cottage hidden in the centre of the woods in the great estate was magical. The cottage was the cutest little house I had ever seen. Built as a getaway for the ladies of the house to get away from the hustle and bustle of the big house, to paint write read and rest, it has been transformed into a stunningly appointed cottage for holiday breaks who want a tranquil hideaway holiday.  Including everything you need for a break away the cottage is available to rent along with another 4 restored follies on the estate that accommodate various sizes of parties. Once we were settled in and changed, we went across to the restaurant which was located at the other end of the estate.

The Granary Restaurant: A Culinary Delight

The Granary Restaurant is a cornerstone of the Weston Park experience, offering a dining experience that marries tradition with contemporary flair. Housed in a beautifully restored 18th-century building, the restaurant exudes rustic charm while providing a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The Granary’s interiors, with exposed beams and original brickwork, create a cosy yet elegant setting that is perfect for any occasion. We were warmly greeted by Sue Smith the restaurant manager who took our drinks order. I decided to go for the Weston Park Gin and Tonic which was a great Gin my husband had a Guinness West Indian porter.  Sue then brought over the menu. It all sounded tremendous, all locally or estate-sourced and grown.  The restaurant certainly champions the estate and local produce which is evident throughout the menu. Sue was extremely knowledgeable about the ingredients, and we took her advice when we were unsure of what to order.   I chose the Crayfish tart to start which was light and delicious  and Nick chose the Lamb roulade, which he is still raving about.  For the main course as a fish lover, I couldn’t resist the Pan Fried salmon and Nick went for  Slow roasted Beef Feather blade, both of which were cooked to perfection and although I am on a diet for the Dessert I devoured the  Chocolate Delice, which was one of the nicest things I have ever had the pleasure to eat. My husband went for the Mr Moyden’s handmade Cheese plate

The culinary team who on the evening in question was headed by Chef Rob Perez at the Granary is dedicated to showcasing the finest local produce, with a menu that changes seasonally to reflect the best of what the region has to offer. Diners can expect to enjoy a variety of dishes that celebrate traditional British cuisine with a modern twist. From hearty breakfasts and leisurely lunches to indulgent afternoon teas and exquisite dinners, the Granary offers a dining experience that caters to all tastes and preferences. The walled garden on the estate produces a rich harvest which goes straight for the Kitchen and their artisan producers including Mr Moyden’s handmade cheese and Buttercross Farm . We both chose a carafe of wine to accompany the meal, Mine was the Crossings Marlborough Wild Reserve Sauvignon  Blanc 2022 from New Zealand and Nick went for a red Chilean merlot

Signature dishes often feature locally sourced meats, fresh vegetables from nearby farms, and artisanal cheeses, ensuring that each meal is not only delicious but also supports the local community. The Granary is also known for its impressive selection of wines and craft ales, carefully chosen to complement the menu and enhance the dining experience.  Following the meal from which we were truly stuffed, we needed to have a rest so we headed back to the cottage and settled down to drink yet more wine and chill out
