Stoke’s own Johnny Wilkes in his 20th year!, in the role of Dick Whittington, was a perfect fit as the hero embarking on his journey to find fame and fortune in London. Their infectious energy and sharp comedic timing had the audience onside from the very first moment. With a combination of cheeky grins, physical comedy, and a knack for connecting with the audience, Johnny kept the show light-hearted and full of charm adding in so many references to all the things us Stokie’s loves. But the villain of the piece, Kai, Owen was equally spectacular. With their larger-than-life portrayal of the dastardly King Rat, the boos and hisses from the audience were loud and proud, adding to the traditional pantomime atmosphere. Every sneer, every exaggerated gesture, and every line delivered with wicked flair had the crowd gleefully engaged in the classic villain-vs-hero dynamic. The more the villain played up to the crowd, the more they were met with enthusiastic reactions from the packed theatre.
Of course, no panto would be complete without a wisecracking sidekick, and in Christian Patterson, who played Sarah the Cook, the audience got one of the best. With perfect comic timing, Christian delivered a stream of jokes, puns, and clever one-liners that kept the energy up throughout the performance. Whether bouncing off Dick or locking horns with King Rat, Sarah’s dynamic with the rest of the cast was a highlight that had the crowd roaring with laughter. The lovely Gina Murray as Spirit of the Bells and equally gorgeous Samara Casteallo as Dick’s love interest Alice Fitzwarren, both sang the amazing score that kept the story moving throughout
