Young Climate Leaders Emerge from Carbon Literacy Training at Sir Thomas Boughey Academy

Halmerend, Staffordshire – 4th June 2025

As the demand for climate knowledge and green skills grows, students at Sir Thomas Boughey Academy are stepping up. In a time when national conversations around climate targets are becoming increasingly complex, these young people are proving that meaningful climate action doesn’t have to be political. Thanks to Carbon Literacy training delivered and funded by Green Lark Environmental Solutions, they are gaining the understanding, motivation, and confidence to lead on sustainability—both in school and beyond.

Sixteen students from the school, part of the Windsor Academy Trust, have successfully completed the Carbon Literacy Project’s accredited training. The course was delivered by Daniel Cope, Director of Green Lark Environmental Solutions, who brings over two decades of experience in the

environmental sector. Green Lark also funded the training as part of its commitment to empowering the next generation of environmental leaders.

The students, a mix of Year 9 and Year 10 pupils, demonstrated exceptional enthusiasm, insight, and commitment to tackling climate change. All sixteen participants completed the

two-day course and earned official Carbon Literacy

certification on 2nd June 2025.

“We are incredibly proud of the students who achieved the exceptional Carbon Literacy Qualification,” said Jane Hingley, Headteacher at the academy. “Green Lark has empowered our Community Ambassadors and Science Club members to actively consider how they can contribute to a more sustainable future.”

“When Daniel first introduced us to the qualification, we were eager to get involved—but we couldn’t have anticipated the profound positive impact it would have on our students. We’re now excited to see them apply their learning to help reduce carbon emissions here at Sir

Thomas Boughey.”

Daniel Cope shared his admiration for the students:

“I was genuinely inspired by the passion and insight the students brought to the training. Their ideas and engagement give me real hope for the future. They’re already thinking like the sustainability leaders and innovators we’ll need in the years ahead. By earning their Carbon

Literacy certification, they’ve taken a meaningful step toward understanding the challenges and opportunities of a changing world—skills that will serve them well, whatever path they choose.”

Lainie Whalley, one of the students who completed the course, added:

“It was a really interesting course—some of the statistics were actually shocking! I enjoyed how it made you think about the impact we’re having on the climate and what steps we can take to help reduce carbon emissions.”
