How to Look After Yourself This Summer

Summer is, for many, the best time of year. It’s a chance to get outside and bask in the sunshine, to take advantage of longer days, and to enjoy the occasional barbecue. It’s also a chance to jet off to some suitably warm part of the world, and soak up even more of the sun.

Of course, in order to make the most of the weather, it’s worth taking a few sensible precautions. But what might these amount to? Let’s consider a few of them.

Stay Hydrated in the Heat

To begin with, it’s essential that you drink enough water. Your body will regulate its temperature by sweating, and the water you lose will need to be replaced. That means drinking, if you’re going to avoid dehydration. You’ll want to keep a supply of water to hand. Don’t rely on alcohol, as the cocktails and beer you consume at a beachside bar will actually cause you to lose water, thanks to their diuretic properties.

Sun Safety: Protecting Your Skin

Of course, the most obvious and pressing danger presented by the sun is the sunshine itself. Sunburn isn’t just an aesthetic problem; it will also increase your risk of melanoma skin cancer. Make sure that you seek the shade when the sun is at its highest, and that you apply sunblock regularly. If you’re getting wet, then you might need to replace your sunblock as soon as you get out of the water. Wide-brimmed hats are also very useful!

Supporting Your Mental Well-being

Summer can be a very busy time, when it comes to your social life. You might find yourself regularly spending time with friends. This is essential, as it can bolster your mental wellbeing in a way that a thousand yoga sessions could not. But at the same time, it’s important to take a break. Social fatigue is a real phenomenon, and it’s essential that you find at least a little bit of time for yourself.

Staying Active and Safe Outdoors

Summer is a great time for outdoor exercise, even in the UK, where the weather is often less than reliable. You’ll want to make time to exercise, perhaps in your local park. Try to keep a consistent schedule, but be mindful of the weather. During a heat wave, you might want to reschedule that midday jog.

Healthy Travel: Preparing for Spontaneous Getaways

If you want your summer holidays to unfold without a hitch, then you’ll want to plan for them. This is important even if you’re going on a last-minute break.

Get all of your skincare essentials packed, and make sure that you’ve checked out any weather-related advice specific to the place you’re visiting. Just because you’re booking at the last minute doesn’t mean you won’t have time to see what’s coming – and if you are surprised, then you can always pick up supplies along the way.
