A53 carriageway set to be resurfaced in major road repair scheme

Significant repairs are starting on the A53 carriageway this week, thanks to a £220,000 highways investment.

The scheme on the A53 Newcastle Road, crossing the Baldwin’s Gate railway bridge, will see highways crews replacing ironwork and damaged kerbs as they completely resurface the carriageway.

Temporary traffic lights will be in place from 19 February to 18 March to keep the public and work force safe. Access will be maintained for residents and businesses.

Weather permitting, the road is currently scheduled to close overnight from 11 March to 13 March from 7pm to 6am so the carriageway can be resurfaced.

The scheme will cost £220,000 to complete and take around five weeks to complete.

Staffordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, David Williams, said: “This major resurfacing scheme at Baldwin’s Gate will give the road a new lease of life and make the world of difference to residents and businesses in the area.

“As a county council, we know that good roads are important to keep Staffordshire on the move and that is why we are investing in schemes like this to prolong their lives and make them safer for cyclists, motorists and pedestrians.

“We have written to residents and businesses in the area ahead of the works and have scheduled for the resurfacing to take place overnight to ensure minimum disruption to the local community.

“However, as with any major works, some minor traffic delays may occur, so please plan your journeys in advance.

“Thank you to everyone for their patience.”

Recently, the county council announced it will carry out an additional £50 million worth of repairs and essential maintenance of the 6,000 kilometres of roads across Staffordshire on top of any government grant.

This includes more road resurfacing schemes and getting potholes repaired quickly.
