Twenty years ago, a small but determined group of runners gathered in Stoke-on-Trent for the very first Potter’s ’Arf Marathon. It was tough. It was hilly. It was everything a proper half-marathon should be — and it instantly captured the spirit of the city.
Now, two decades on, the Potter’s ’Arf (as it is more commonly known) has grown into Stoke-on-Trent & Staffordshire’s biggest running event — a day when the city stops, cheers, and comes together in a way few occasions can match. On race day, the streets transform into a ribbon of colour and noise, lined with thousands of spectators armed with homemade signs, cowbells, and plenty of oatcakes for post-race refuelling.
More Than Just a Race
For those who have never experienced it, the Potter’s ’Arf is far more than 13.1 miles. It’s a living, breathing celebration of grit and togetherness. Whether you’re tackling the race solo, sharing the distance in the relay, or joining the walking event, everyone is cheered like a champion.
The route is famous — some might say infamous — for its challenging climbs, especially the legendary “Heartbreak Hill” in Milton. This isn’t a hill you forget. But the thing is, you’re never alone on it. Crowds gather on the roadside, shouting encouragement to strangers as if they were family. One runner described it as “like being carried to the top on a wave of noise and kindness.”
And that’s the magic of the Potter’s ’Arf. It’s about people — the thousands of participants, the army of volunteers, and the residents who come out in force to turn a tough race into one of the most uplifting days in the local calendar.
In 2024, the event welcomed a record-breaking 2,500 participants on race day. Early indicators for 2025 suggest the event is on course to surpass last year’s numbers, marking another significant step in its continued growth.
