The Government has announced plans that would remove jury trials from a large number of criminal cases. Only the most serious offences such as murder rape and manslaughter will automatically continue before a jury. Many other cases will instead be decided by a judge.
This matters in Staffordshire because our local courts including Stoke on Trent Crown Court are already under pressure. The national Crown Court backlog stands at around seventy eight thousand cases and Staffordshire is among the regions where delays have grown sharply. Many victims witnesses and defendants in our own communities are now waiting months and even years for cases to progress.
The Government says that judge led hearings for lower level offences will speed up the process and help clear the backlog.
