Every so often, the relentless hum of daily life demands that we hit the pause button. We crave a change of scenery, fresh air, and a little space to reset. Yet, for those of us with beloved four-legged companions, the prospect of a getaway is often laced with a familiar pang of anxiety: What do we do with the dog? Leaving them behind at a kennel feels like a compromise, while dragging them along to a place that merely “tolerates” pets can strip the romance right out of a holiday.
Fortunately, we discovered a place where you don’t have to choose between luxury comfort and canine companionship. Packaged beautifully into a single, seamless night away, our recent escape to Shakespeare Country alongside our lovely Maltese, Tiny, proved to be the quintessential English countryside recharge.
Our destination? The charming, historic Clarion Hotel Charlecote Pheasant, nestled quietly in the heart of the Warwickshire countryside. The best part for weary travellers looking to escape the concrete jungle of the Midlands? It is situated just an hour away from Stoke, making it an effortless, stress-free drive that delivers you straight into a pastoral paradise before the road weariness can even set in.
A Scenic Prelude and The Perfect Welcome
As the urban landscape faded into the rearview mirror, the rolling hills and canopy-covered lanes of Warwickshire opened to greet us. The countryside surroundings here are nothing short of gorgeous. It is a timeless landscape defined by ancient, sweeping trees, patchwork green meadows, and the tranquil flow of the nearby River Avon. Arriving at the hotel feels like stepping back into a gentler era. Formed from an attractively converted 18th-century farmhouse complex, the pink-brick property exudes rustic, historic charm while maintaining a thoroughly modern standard of hospitality.
The moment we walked through the doors, the tone was set by the incredibly friendly staff. There is a distinct difference between corporate politeness and genuine warmth, and the team at the Charlecote Pheasant possess the latter in abundance. They greeted us with bright smiles and, naturally, treated Tiny like the true VIP (Very Important Pup) she is.

What truly elevated our arrival was the delightful attention to detail awaiting us in our room. The hotel doesn’t just call itself pet-friendly; they live and breathe it. Waiting to welcome us was a spread of complimentary treats: decadent chocolates for the humans to indulge in, and a collection of lovely, tail-wagging treats curated specifically for Tiny. It was a small touch, but it spoke volumes about the hotel’s commitment to making every member of the family feel cherished.

Executive Cottage Comforts
During our stay, we were accommodated in one of the hotel’s premier setups: an executive cottage-type accommodation that perfectly bridges the gap between privacy and hotel luxury. The layout gives you the comforting illusion of having your own country hideaway, complete with character features, ample space to unwind, and direct proximity to the beautifully landscaped lawns.
The interior design thoughtfully preserves the historic farming heritage of the estate while weaving in plush bedding, pristine contemporary bathrooms, and all the modern conveniences necessary for a relaxing stay. For a spirited little Maltese like Tiny, the layout was a dream. Having immediate, easy access to the secure outdoor areas meant morning and late-night stretches were completely effortless. It was clean, warm, incredibly comfortable, and beautifully quiet—an ideal sanctuary for a much-needed recharge.
Culinary Excellence: From Sunset to Sunrise
A country break is incomplete without spectacular food, and the dining experience at the Pheasant Restaurant safely exceeded our expectations. The restaurant itself is gorgeous, retaining original solid wooden beams that create a cosy, atmospheric environment.
Our evening meal was of absolute excellent quality. The à la carte menu showcases a brilliant celebration of seasonal flavours and locally sourced ingredients. Every dish that arrived at our table was beautifully presented, perfectly cooked, and packed with rich, comforting flavour profiles. Even better, the hotel features designated dog-friendly dining sections within the lower lounge and bar areas. This meant we didn’t have to leave Tiny pining alone in the cottage; she got to sit proudly by our side, soaking up the ambient warmth and the occasional admiring glance from neighbouring diners. She was even treated to her very own Doggie Dining experience, which is especially created from real human food, designed to not only to be delicious for our furry companions but also to leave out all of the ingredients that disagree with Dogs and leave in only the wholesome goodness that every pooch needs to stay healthy, satisfied and out Tiny certainly woofed it down.

A Haven for Walkies and Warwickshire Wonders
One of the standout features of staying at the Charlecote Pheasant is its unbeatable geographical location. For dog owners, the immediate vicinity offers an array of excellent country walks. Right on the hotel’s doorstep lies a stunning five-acre private field, allowing well-behaved dogs like Tiny to stretch their legs safely off-lead.
Just a two-minute stroll across the road brings you to the magnificent grounds of the National Trust’s Charlecote Park. Walking through this historic 16th-century deer park, where elegant herds roam along the banks of the River Avon, is an unforgettable experience. Pups on leads are warmly welcomed to explore the designated pathways, making it a peaceful, visually stunning route that leaves both humans and hounds thoroughly content.
Should you wish to venture out a little further to absorb the local history, the hotel serves as the ultimate springboard for the wider county. Iconic Warwickshire attractions are just a stone’s throw away:
- Stratford-upon-Avon: The historic, timber-framed birthplace of William Shakespeare is under 20 minutes away (approx. 4 miles). You can easily spend an afternoon wandering past the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, exploring the historic streets, or enjoying a dog-friendly boat cruise down the river.
- Warwick: The spectacular medieval town of Warwick, dominated by the towering, world-famous Warwick Castle, is also under 20 minutes away (approx. 6 miles). It offers an incredible day out full of living history, immaculate ramparts, and quaint independent shops.
The Verdict: An Unmissable Countryside Escape
Our brief, twenty-four-hour escape reminded us exactly why short breaks are so vital. You don’t need a fortnight away to clear your head; you simply need the right location, excellent hospitality, great food, and the comfort of knowing your dog is being treated like family.
The Charlecote Pheasant Hotel checks every single box with effortless grace.
