Thomas Dean Kingfisher – A Master of Staffordshire Ceramic Art
Estimate: £50 – £100
This exquisite oil painting by Thomas Dean (b.1865) captures a kingfisher in flight over water lilies, demonstrating the artistry of a relatively unknown Staffordshire ceramic artist. Trained at Minton under William Mussill, Dean decorated art pottery for local firms including Wedgwood, Minton, Spode, Wardle and Thomas Forester & Sons.
He taught bird and flower painting at both Burslem and Hanley Schools of Art, living at 47 Carlisle Street, Dresden, Stoke-on-Trent. This piece represents a rare opportunity to own work by an artist who shaped Staffordshire’s ceramic tradition and was father to renowned potters Ronald and Albert Dean.
