Bagpipes Not Included: Vintage Sporrans Stir Up Bidding Battle

A set of early 20th-century Scottish sporrans caused quite a stir in the sale room at Staffordshire auction house Cuttlestones, fetching an impressive £1,600 at auction.

The four brown leather sporrans, complete with brass fittings and showing signs of age, proved unexpectedly popular with bidders. While more modern examples of Scottish regalia – in October last year, a feather bonnet together with a tray containing a new horsehair sporran, sealskin sporran, white spats, belts, ties and a Scottish brooch sold for £200 – the level of interest in this antique quartet was unprecedented.

It marks a significant leap in demand for older, rarer examples and is a reminder that the collectors’ market for traditional Highland dress remains strong.

MD and Head Auctioneer at Cuttlestones, Ben Gamble, says:

“Quirky lots like these often surprise us. They show how broad the appeal of our sales can be — whether you’re a collector, historian or simply someone with a love for craftsmanship and character, and how our online live bidding can ensure our sales reach the right audience – no matter how niche that may be.”

Cuttlestones is now inviting consignments for its forthcoming fine art and specialist auctions. For free, no-obligation valuations, email valuations@cuttlestones.co.uk, send photos via WhatsApp to 07949 603872, or call 01785 714905.
