A Perfect Retreat at the stunning Shropshire Shepherd Huts

After spending a wonderful weekend at one of the Shropshire Shepherd Huts, I can honestly say this was one of the most relaxing getaways I’ve had in years. The setting is tranquil – nestled in rolling countryside that feels worlds away from the hustle and bustle of daily life, yet remarkably accessible. The property is surrounded by pastoral beauty, with horses, cows, and sheep dotting the landscape, creating that quintessentially English countryside atmosphere.

The location couldn’t be better, with the charming market town of Bishop’s Castle just a short drive away. It’s the perfect base for exploring the area’s historic streets, cute antique shops, and amazing dog-friendly pubs – we loved being able to bring our four-legged friend along for a pint and hearty meal. The proximity to the shops was incredibly convenient for picking up supplies.

The shepherd hut itself is utterly adorable and impeccably appointed. Every detail has been thoughtfully considered – from the comfortable furnishings to the clever storage solutions that make the compact space feel surprisingly spacious. The owners, Max and Jess, have truly thought of everything a guest might need. We were delighted to find a welcome pack waiting for us with fresh bread, homemade jam, local honey, farm-fresh eggs, and even a bottle of prosecco – such lovely personal touches that immediately made us feel at home.

One of the highlights was the wood-heated Scandinavian hot tub situated outside the hut. There’s something wonderfully therapeutic about soaking in the warm, still water while gazing out at the stunning countryside views. The covered dining area was another brilliant feature, but we found ourselves drawn to the amazing BBQ area where we cooked the most delicious steaks for our evening meal – there’s nothing quite like dining outdoors with those incredible views.  Don’t worry about taking a robe, footwear or fluffy towels for the hot tub either as it’s all provided. Just pop in your bathers and you’re ready to go.

As dog owners, we particularly appreciated the security of the property. The fencing and layout mean there’s absolutely no way for dogs to escape, so we could relax completely knowing our four-legged companion was safe to roam and explore. It’s rare to find accommodation that’s so genuinely dog-friendly while maintaining such high standards.

This area is truly a walker’s paradise, with plenty of hiking trails right on the doorstep. We spent a few hours exploring the surrounding countryside, discovering hidden paths and breathtaking viewpoints. The views from the property itself are simply stunning – endless rolling hills and pastoral scenes that change beautifully throughout the day.

Max and Jess have created something truly special here. Their attention to detail, warm hospitality, and the idyllic setting combine to create an experience that’s both luxurious and authentically rural.  Max is a renowned artist, and the shepherd hut is decorated with his artwork, which is fascinating to look at as his work is so detailed. He also has his studio here, and if you want to have a look at his pieces and possibly commission a piece by him, I am sure you won’t be disappointed. Jess, on the other hand, owns her own wellness business and offers yoga retreats and wellness experiences, and I am sure if you are interested, she would be delighted to introduce you to what she has to offer.
