The Village of Alrewas in Staffordshire is celebrating its success in the Best Kept Village Community Awards as overall Winner for the County of Staffordshire and Winner of South Staffordshire Best Large Village.
Phil Swift Co-ordinator of the Village submissions for the award said “Our success was based on the wonderful community our vibrant village has developed. The submission was put together by an active and dedicated team of villagers and supported by village organisations and businesses, as well as individuals who made it all possible. We are delighted with our awards in various categories which will give us a £1,000 towards a community project in the village “
The programme, which is administered and financially sponsored by the Community Foundation for Staffordshire and Shropshire, has 3 sections, and as well as success in the Best Kept Village Community section, individuals in the village were successful in other categories.
As part of the section ‘The Spirit of BKVC seen through children’s poster’, children from All Saints Primary School submitted posters showing their views of the village community. The village was thrilled to have an overall winner in 8 – 11 yrs age group and a second place in the 5 to 7 yrs age group.
A third section featured submissions for a Trailblazer Award for ‘ Individuals who were recognised at going the extra mile to protect their local countryside’. Wendy Walker was a joint winner for this award, having raised over £30,000 to help repair the local iconic church buildings. Wendy was also President of the Alrewas Show last year, which celebrates Alrewas and District Agriculture and horticulture. She has also been actively involved in leading local campaigns against the gravel quarrying that is impacting our local environment.
