Here’s 10 simple DIY steps to follow to create your very own birdhouse at home this spring
Whilst you’re snuggled on the sofa, spare a thought for the birds in your garden. Better still, why not make your feathered friends a birdhouse with a living roof. Large or small, it doesn’t matter what size garden you have. This handy home is easily attached to a wall – so it’s a space saver that looks good and the birds will be grateful too.
We asked DIY experts, Dremel to send us this simple step-by-step pictorial guide with instructions so you can get to making a birdhouse for your feathered friends.
And here are the steps!
Step 0: What you’ll need: 5.2mm triplex plywood for the birdhouse itself, 6mm dowel sticks for the connections, a DSM20 compact cutting saw, a Dremel Multi-Tool like the Dremel 3000, a Dremel line and circle cutter, a cutter accessory, a sanding accessory and a pencil.
Step 1: Trace out the shapes of the walls of the birdhouse onto the plywood – see Step 8 for an overview of the ‘planks’ you’ll need to cut.
Step 2: Use the DSM20 to cut out the shapes.
Step 3: Saw the dowel sticks to size although remember that they will need to be several mm bigger than the width of the house.
Step 4: Use the Dremel 3000 to drill out the small holes into which you will insert the dowels. Next, use a cutter accessory to make the holes a little bigger.
Step 5: Use the Dremel line and circle cutter to cut the big hole through which birds will enter the birdhouse – their front door! Next, sand the entrance to the birdhouse with a sanding band accessory.
Step 6: Use the DSM20 to create notches in the side sections. The roof will be attached to them later.Note: The lower you make the notches, the higher the plants you will need.
Step 7: Use your multi-tool with a cutting accessory to make the smaller notches for the side sections of the birdhouse. This will make it easier for you to remove these small pieces of wood.
Step 8: Once you have completed all the above steps correctly, you will have this assembly kit in front of you.
Step 9: Carefully assemble your birdhouse. Slide the various parts together, making sure that the holes are at the side.
Step 10: Push the dowels through the holes on the sides. If necessary, use a hammer to carefully tap them through the holes as pictured here.
Finish off your birdhouse with some pretty plants on the roof. Tip: A climbing plant would look great growing over the edge of the roof.
